Guilty Pleasures - Summer Reading

Okay, how many of you thought this was going to be about 50 Shades of Grey?  It's not. Somehow I don't think I'll touch that book with a ten-foot pole. Maybe it's just me but there it is.

Plus if you're a "book snob" you probably shouldn't read this post either.  You know what I mean.  You only read "real" literature and the likes of Nora Roberts or chick lit is beneath you.  No offense to Nora Roberts, I enjoy her books and admire her ability to cover a multitude of subjects.  It's just when someone says to you

"You'll forgive me for saying this my dear, but obviously reading Nora Roberts is easy to read quickly"

in response to my boast about how fast I read books it's hard not to feel like you've just had your intelligence mildly insulted.  Of course, it took me about two days to come back with an "oh yeah, well I also read classics like Lord of the Rings, Dickens, you know other classics like the Woman in White and the Count of Monte Christo".  Obviously, I suck in witty comebacks which is why it took me two days of pondering to come up with that.  Which was probably better than saying "I am too intelligent."

Well anyways, that's why I read them.  With three kids, a husband and a busy household I need something I can jump in and out of quickly and it doesn't take days to finish them.  These days I just don't have that kind of commitment to a book.  Lately, I've run through my list of easy to read authors on my library's limited ebook rotation so I forced myself to dive in and try something untested.

That's where the Sookie Stackhouse series Charlaine Harris comes in.  One book and I was hooked, sucked down into the underworld of Vamps trying to mainstream among humans.  Oh and werewolves, fairies and a whole host of other supernatural creatures.  By book two, I learned that these books are the basis for the HBO tv series TrueBlood.  Well, if I had of known how entertaining these books were, I would have dived into the tv series  4 seasons ago.

Did you know the name comes from the synthetic blood the Japanese developed called True Blood which enabled the Vampires to*cough* "come out of the coffin".  FYI that's story line trivia not a real news flash. ;)

Anyways, I'm on book seven and can't wait for the next one and the next one.  In fact, I finally gave up trying to reserve the single books online and have my name down for the entire series because as soon as you put one down you want to jump into the next.  The things that happen to this girl will have you installing floodlights in your backyard and sleeping with garlic under your pillow.

So that's my guilty little secret these days.  What's yours?

  1. I haven't read Nora Roberts and honestly I even don't know who it is?

  2. Well, I don't read Nora Roberts but Vampire fiction has been my guilty pleasure since Ann Rice started publishing ;)
    And, I'm a Public Librarian :)
    Enjoy and read read read!!!!
