Soothing Teething with Orajel - Review

While you all know that my children are long past the days of teething, I can honestly say when they were babes Orajel was my go to product to soothe their pain.  I liked that Orajel gave them fast pain relief without having to dose them with tylenol or advil constantly.  Orajel has come out with two great products.

Homeopathic Teething Gel - ENG_FR
“New Orajel® Natural Source Homeopathic Remedy Teething Gel. This combination of natural source homeopathic ingredients calms pain and irritability due to teething. The multi-ingredient approach to the multiple symptoms of teething combines naturally sourced medicinal ingredients Calcium Phosphate which supports dentition, Chamomilla (a whole flowering plant) which relieves irritability and Coffea cruda (dried, unroasted seed) which helps ease wakefulness and diuresis.
This makes Orajel® Natural Source Homeopathic Remedy Teething gel a great choice for the effective temporary relief of symptoms of simple restlessness and wakeful irritability due to cutting of teeth. Orajel® Natural Source Homeopathic Remedy Teething Gel is also Paraben Free, Dye Free & Sugar Free.”  Available at retailers across Canada  SRP:  $9.99

SmartDose Teething Swabs - ENG_FR
“Orajel® SmartDose™ Swabs for Teething offer instant teething pain relief in a convenient and hygienic swab. They are easy to use, mess-free, and portable for teething pain relief on the go.

· Safe, consistent dosage every time
· Includes a plastic carrying case for easy access and portability
· Less risk of contamination and better hygiene as parents do not have to put cream on their fingers
· Delicious berry flavour
· Medicinal ingredient: Benzocaine 7.5% w/w”   Now available across Canada  SRP: $8.49
I think both these products are a great idea.  For those of us who are concerned about what they are putting in babie’s mouth, the new Homeopathic remedy is right on.  Although, I also particularly like the smart dose with the applicator that enables you to swab their gums without any guess of whether you hit their gums or their tongue. *L* Who knows maybe Orajel will combine the two.

If you’d like to read more tips on how to care for your baby’s new forming teeth read below:

"Dr. Gordon Scott, D.D.S., Shares His Tips on How to Care for Your Baby’s Teeth*
Oral care should start from the very beginning of a child’s life. Even before their first tooth emerges, inadequate oral care can affect their future appearance and health. Infants have special oral care needs that every new and experienced parent should know about.
“Baby teeth usually emerge around seven to eight months of age, and being armed with the right information on the special oral health needs of infants will help guard against baby bottle decay and ensure your child is receiving enough fluoride which will lead to healthy teeth and a beautiful smile.” says Dr. Gordon Scott, a Canadian dentist with over twenty-five years experience.
Below are helpful tips from Dr. Gordon Scott on how to care for your baby’s teeth:
What is a hygienic way to treat teething?
Before treating infants for teething, it is important to know what is causing the discomfort. This can be determined by rubbing a finger gently along the gums feeling for swollen ridges or a tooth under the surface of the gums. Medicines are often applied to the babies’ gums to relieve swelling and pain. Orajel® teething gels are the number one pharmacist recommended teething pain reliever. Orajel® SmartDose™ Swabs for Teething, will work as a numbing agent to dull the nerves in the gums resulting in the pain subsiding. Always consult your health care practitioner before use on children under the age of two. A few things to look for when choosing a teething pain reliever:
  • A safe and consistent dosage is administered each and every time. Always read directions before use.
  • Low risk of contamination by including an applicator which will promote cleaner hygiene
  • Portability of the teething gel, making it a quick fix no matter where the location
  • Flavoured teething gel to please an uncomfortable baby
Are there homeopathic and natural ways to provide oral care to infants?
For those parents who are looking for home remedies and natural ways to provide oral care to their infants, there are many tips and tricks that I recommend. I also recently came upon the new Orajel® Natural Source Homeopathic Remedy Teething Gel that offers effective pain relief and is free of parabens, dye and sugar. Medicinal ingredients for the New Orajel® Natural Source Homeopathic Remedy Teething Gel include the homeopathic properties of Calcium Phosphate which supports dentition, Chamomilla (a whole flowering plant) which relieves irritability and Coffea cruda (dried, unroasted seed) which helps ease wakefulness and dieresis. • Cold, Frozen Washcloths – tie the washcloth into knots as some babies enjoy the hardness. Try out different degrees of coldness for each baby.
  • Ice Cube and Slushy Remedy – choose either water, breast milk or chamomile tea to freeze. The frozen sensation will help ease the pain of teething.
  • Plush Chew Toys – a fun, colourful and bright chew toy will engage your baby and possibly distract from the pain of teething.
  • Your Finger – one’s finger is a chew toy that is never too far away. Always remember to clean your finger prior to providing it as a chew toy.
  • Cold Fruit or Vegetables – use re-usable tea bags to package frozen carrots or bananas cut into a size that is too large for a baby to place into their mouths. Ensure the tea bag strings are cut off as longer strings can represent a strangulation hazard for babies.
When to use fluoride and fluoride-free oral care products?
Babies typically show signs of their first tooth at the age of seven to eight months. Even before that first tooth emerges, it is important to start thinking about how to properly administer oral care. From seven to 18 months, the focus is on teething and cleaning gums with a tooth and gum cleanser and soft brush or finger cot. Once your baby reaches 18 months, it is all about creating good brushing habits with a fluoride-free toothpaste and children’s toothbrush.
Four years of age is ideal to begin incorporating fluoride into your child’s oral care regimen as you can be sure they will not swallow it. A child’s developing teeth can benefit from fluoride. The fluoride mineral will help prevent tooth decay by strengthening tooth enamel and making it more resistant to acids and harmful bacteria.
One thing to note is that while fluoride can be a good thing for a child’s developing teeth, too much can lead to a condition called fluorosis, which causes discolouration of teeth resulting in white spots or dark spots that can show up on a child’s adult teeth.
  • Baby Orajel® Tooth & Gum Cleaners are fluoride-free and non-foaming, making it safe if swallowed. A soft brush and finger cot are included to make it easier to clean your child’s gums.
  • Use a fluoride-free toothpaste like Orajel® Toddler MY WAY!™ Girls Fluoride-Free Toothpaste until your child is four years old
  • When choosing a fluoride-free toothpaste, use a gluten-free, dairy-free and sodium lauryl sulfate-free paste
  • When it comes time to transition to a fluoride toothpaste, make it fun for your child. Look for toothpastes that have fun visuals, a great taste and that will engage your child – which will make oral care fun for the entire family
  • New Orajel® Kids MY WAY!™ Girls Anticavity Fluoride Toothpaste Gel is a great transition paste for children
Make sure to supervise your child when using a fluoride toothpaste by ensuring they use a peasized amount of paste and they do not swallow the paste
* This is a paid endorsement"

What about you?  How do you help your child get through the teething process?
