Mom of the Year – It’s Down to 8 Finalists

I was excited when Walmart launched their first ever “Mom of the Year” contest. After all, mom’s work hard and deserve some recognition.  So it was no small wonder that the response was overwhelming with over 16,900 nominations. With so many inspiring stories, it was bound to be very difficult for the judges to narrow it down to just 8 finalists.

I have had a chance to read the stories on all 8 finalists and while they are all inspiring, one spoke to me more than the others and that’s…

Carol Westberg.
“She was diagnosed in September 2004 with Multiple Myeloma,an incurable cancer of the plasma cells and was given a prognosis of 3-5 years. She underwent a stem cell transplant, several chemotherapy and radiation treatments. She never complains, just keeps fighting.”
read Carol’s story here.

Despite the fact that she’s fighting a serious illness, Carol never gives up and continues to give and help others whether it’s educating people on what it’s like living with an incurable illness or counseling newly diagnosed Multiple Myeloma patients.

I would like to think that if I was hit with a serious illness that I would rise to the occasion as graciously as Carol does. That rather than wallowing in self-pity, I’d still see life as full of possibilities and just maybe find a need that needs someone like me to come along side and fill it.
